Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

The Arizona Humane Society has one question for you: do you believe in Magic? This handsome feline sure hopes you do! Although he is quite the crowd worker with his charm and good looks, this 6-year-old black shorthair kitty, unfortunately, does not have the most magical story.

With quite a history with AHS, Magic originally found his way to the shelter in 2021 after he was found abandoned. His previous owners were evicted and did not take him along. Rescued by an AHS Cruelty Investigator and given some TLC in the shelter, Magic was quickly adopted and has been there for the last two years.
