UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Albert Hall takes over Tohono Chul Tea Room

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 06.03.2009
The chef behind noted Tucson restaurant Acacia at St. Philips will take over the popular Tohono Chul Tea Room on the Northwest Side beginning July 1.
The Tea Room will close June 30 for a quick transition and will reopen for breakfast and lunch service on July 5. The restaurant also serves afternoon tea.
Hall said he will maintain much of the Tea Room's Southwestern-inspired menu, including the prickly-pear margaritas and lemonade, and he'll introduce some signature dishes.
"We're going to focus on local and indigenous ingredients, so I'm doing some research now on how we're going to incorporate it," Hall said Tuesday.
Hall also is working on opening Marketplace by Acacia, a small Euro market next door to Acacia at 4340 N. Campbell Ave. The store will sell grab-and-go sandwiches and salads, heat-and-eat dinner entrees, breakfast sandwiches, coffee and a juice bar. Hall said he hopes to have it open by late July.
Tohono Chul is at 7366 N. Paseo del Norte, off West Ina Road. Details: 797-1222.
